This site is designed to offer resources that can bring lived experience into your crisis call center operations by offering tangible resources such as organizational assessments, personal assessments, and access to The Way Forward report from the Suicide Attempt Survivors Task Force of the National Action Alliance for Suicide Prevention.

Suicide death is a difficult and growing problem around the world.

Activating Hope brings a powerful resource to the challenge of reducing suicide.

Whether you are an individual with lived experience yourself, who are looking for ways to consider and use your experience, or if you are a leader or organization seeking to integrate that experience to reduce suicide, we are here to help you get to the next step and make a difference by #ActivatingHope in your community.

Activating Hope is

building upon the lived experience of people who have been through suicidal struggles to help others and prevent future suicidal behavior.

The experience of persons who have endured periods of suicidal intensity, distress, or suicide attempts can be a powerful source of knowledge, hope, and strength for others. As recently seen, stories of recovery from and growth through periods of suicidal struggle can spread a ‘contagion of hope’ and reduce suicide publicly.

This long-neglected “lived experience” can help save lives and provide hope to millions of people”

Lived Experiences:

Craig Miller

The Biggest Day of My Life

People ‘who ‘have been there’ are uniquely able to speak to the human experience of suicidality and serve as a resource for understanding and information to improve the way communities and societies approach this difficult subject.

Also, people with lived experience of suicide can help reduce suicide directly — by supporting others who are struggling through ‘peer support’ or ‘peer informed’ crisis programs– and indirectly, through involvement in policies, programs, and practices that relate to the cause of suicide prevention at the systems level. By putting that experience into action, whether through work at a counseling or crisis site or in research, service design or policy advocacy, that personal resource becomes ‘lived expertise’ that can take suicide prevention to the next level of life-saving potential.

Activating Hope begins… When organizations and people with lived experience join together to meaningfully dialogue and evaluate, to re-think and rebuild, and to create new resources that can save lives.

A project of the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, includes the world’s foremost experts in the area of lived experience of suicide.

The Activating Hope team evolved from the leadership group that created the world’s first national Attempt Survivor Taskforce on suicide prevention, and its primary product, The Way Forward. Through our resource materials and consultation, we aspire toprovide needed technical assistance to individuals, agencies and crisis centers in their efforts to integrate lived experience into suicide prevention at all levels.
